My clients have some fantastic pieces of art inherited from the wife’s artist grandmother. When she showed me her favorite piece and they told me they were not afraid of darker rich colors I knew a rich, dark green would be fabulous as a wall color backdrop. I suggested Benjamin Moore hunter green, 2041–10. My client wondered out loud what it it would look like to also paint the ceiling that color.  Of course I thought it was perfect for that room!

I believe big art gives big impact. And that dark colors do NOT make a room look smaller! The RIGHT color is the RIGHT  color. When the color is perfect (and there is good lighting) any color will work, the room will feel right and look great. 

Other fabulous pieces for the family room and dining room are the marble top credenza/sofa table, amazing petrified wood coffee table, walnut top “Jacob”dining table and chairs all from Arhaus and the perfectly sized super fabric sectional from Bassett Furniture.

Elegant Shades of Gray Master Bedroom

This is my FAVORITE master bedroom that I have ever worked on. These clients are awesome so the project was fun, we started from scratch, the room had great bones, they had a good budget, they have GREAT taste, and they were brave and open minded about my daring ideas!

My client had this beauitful green velvet chair that she was willing to move to another room or sell when we were completly re-doing her front room. But I loved the chair, and  used it as an anchor for the new decor, and she is so happy it now greets everyone as one of the first things they see upon entering her home. 

We  also started looking for new art to go over her fireplace. But I re-purposed some pictutes she currently had making a collage over her fireplace with sentimental pieces that her family loves. 

The new leather swivel chair has become a favorite spot to swivel to the fireplace, into a conversation or most likely looking out the big front window. 

And lastly the mirror over the couch was one my client currently had and I think works pretty great, but may get touched up with some black paint sometime in the near future.

My client wanted a tranquil front room that would flow into the rest of her home but would have a coastal vibe yet be elegant and elevated. Everything from the rug to the wall color ties together to layer perfectly for a soothing tranquil room.

I love working with previous clients on new projects! This client decided to convert her basement to an Airbnb about a year before she called me. It’s a great location very near the National Zoo in Washington, DC, but she was not getting many bookings. She asked me to help her spruce things up a bit. 
We talked about catering to potential Airbnb clients with  things like nightstands on each side of the bed with lamps. And a rug under the bed where are a visitor actually  steps out of the bed. 

We also looked at the whole space through fresh eyes, seeking for consistency in quality to elevate the whole apartment as best as possible. We tried to weed out the things that had just landed there without much thought.  

I rearranged some furniture, added new, larger-scale customized art, and got a few new pieces to mix in, including some perfect, unique nightstands I found on Craigslist. 
Nothing too dramatic, except maybe painting the TV wall a dark navy I pulled from the rug and new art, but the apartment is now getting many more bookings and does have a different look and feel.

Seamlessly Layered Living Room

This is a well designed and well-layered room that started with a beautiful work of art in the center of the room. I found a perfectly matched rug that echoes the water in the work of art. And this buttery soft leather couch with delicate metal legs is fantastic. 

This room looked very different before with a  much too small red rug, red window treatments with a valance, and a huge old rolled arm sofa. My clients are super happy with the new room.

This dining room is the first thing visitors see when coming to my clients’ new home. It was fun and rewarding to start from scratch with this room. 
We got a beautiful Live Edge dining table with a blue gray stain.

These fun clients had traveled the world for years and finally bought a home to settle down. They have beautiful things to display on the built-ins  but hated the brick fireplace that I beautifully refaced with light gray stacked stone. We built the room colors around one watercolor picture of their grandfather’s storefront that hangs in the room. Fun to have so many senitantal and meaningful things in a room where most all furniture is new!

This family was  more permanently moving their residence to their second home out West. It  had been  a generational home so  almost everything needed to be customized to the current family and updated. 
We had fun with the mudroom/laundry room and the family loves the personal touches there. My clients are quite happy with how the master bathroom turned out and how refacing the family room fireplace and painting the kitchen cabinets completely transformed how the home looks.

Removing a shower from a bathroom is pretty radical, but for my lovely client who only takes baths in this bathroom that just she uses, we made her dreams come true by installing a Victoria + Albert claw foot freestanding tub. I did talk her in to adding a handheld shower head on a wall bar and someone could add a shower curtain at some point if so desired. 

The three different tiles we used layered together beautifully but the floor tile and the secondary wall tile are just background to the stunning two-stone chevron marble wall tile.  We wrapped most of the room to the ceiling in this high-end chevron cut patterened tile. 

To add some earthiness and to save a bit of money we used a cement look large scale tile up to the same height as the tub where the more expensive chevron marble tile would be mostly hidden. For some additional texture and interest we also put it on the sink wall,  side-to-side and up to the ceiling, surrounding the inset medicine cabinet. 

The floor tile is also a matte finish adding another layer of earthiness.

The roughhewn 60 inch vanity adds richness and a lot of storage.  The two pendant lights are set off beautifully hanging in front of the rough texture of the large scale cement look tile. 

My client loves her dramatically different new bathroom that is an absolutely perfect retreat for her!

Family Room with a Place to Put up Their Feet

Basement Apartment Brought to Life

Here is the main living space of a basement apartment I designed that has no windows. I had to get creative for my client that loves nature and the outdoors. I started with this huge photo stretch canvas of a tree and sourced a modern beautiful rug to go on top of the new wood-look flooring.  All the furniture is small scale and upholstered in the same fabric to keep the space looking and feeling as large as possible. And almost every piece is multifunctional. The couch is a hide-a-bed for frequent company. The ottoman is on wheels and can be a bench for extra seating, a soft place for stretching out feet, and the trays stored underneath can come up and work as a table or a place to put drinks. Even the sofa table is a place for critical storage.

The neutral wall color is the same on the walls and the ceiling. The dark green accent color is pulled from the tree photo canvas.

The goal for this master bath renovation was to transform it while keeping the costs as low as possible. This was part of a whole house move-in customization.

We kept both vanites  but painted them white and changed the hardware, faucets  and the countertop to a beautiful quartzite.

We removed the huge plate glass mirrors and terrible strip bulb lighting and upgraded to  beautiful black frame mirrors and elegant more substantial black and white lights.

To keep costs down we kept the tub and original spout but changed out all of the tile surround and added a cut marble stone mosaic tile around the window and on 8 inches of each side wall. (Which was NOT budget friendly). The tub alcove got even more glam with a beautiful deco light. 

The shower got the biggest change with a complete gut, removing both the glass doors and adding partial walls on both sides. Then repeating  the beautiful tub alcove cut marble mosaic on the shower floor.

Of course we installed  new floor tile and coordinating wall paint. 

So as you can see from the before and after pictures this bathroom “facelift” was quite a transformation!

This is the main room for my clients’ modern open condo. They spend a lot of time on these comfortable yet elegant His and Her recliners, that don’t look like the old-school recliners.  The TV consol packs a lot of storage but also has great style. And the tight back sofa is just the right size with sleek lines. By using similar colors in the fabrics and rug color, it helped to keep the space open.

Large family room with big windows but  very little wall space made TV placement tricky. This huge 17 foot tall beautiful stone fireplace gave me my color cues and style cues for a casual earthy designed room. The huge sectional and chair and a half along with the TV stand and coffee table are from Bassett furniture. The wall unit is custom designed and made.

This space is what is seen right when you enter my clients’ renovated home after coming up a few steps from their relativly large entryway. The space was quite awkward with a big skylight and chandlier not centered on anything  and with several main traffic paths. My goal was to bring my clients’ love of rich colors and contempory style into a front room that made sense, was very functional, and is welcoming, and beautiful.

Globally Designed Living Room

Living in Washington DC I have the pleasure and fun to work with many clients who have traveled abroad. The client who I worked with on this home had lived abroad, traveled extensively,  and shop wisely. It was a joy to decorate her living room/dining  area in her townhome! She had treasures from mostly Africa and Japan, but her furniture pieces are all new purchases. The deep shag rug that anchors the seating area is from Bassett Furniture along with the couch and two side chairs. The Blue Stone dining room table and four custom dining chairs with, yes, gray zebra and purple velvet fabric are also from Bassett furniture, but fabric is from Calico Corners. The window treatments are also from Calico Corners. The wall color is a fantastic mix of Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray and the perfect yellow to match the beautiful window treatments Marblehead Gold. The center coffee table looks like she brought it back from an antique shop in Japan but is from Arhaus.

This client wanted a very fun and unique front room. With the thick red shag rug, 3 orange zebra print custom square ottomans, and four unique side tables, this room is one in a million! I grounded the room with these beautiful custom slate blue twin couches and than popped some fun throw pillows. It was awesome to decorate the whole house at Christmas!

Bathroom - "A Bit of Heaven"

The vanities are custom made from my cabinet makers and have Absolute Black quartz counter tops. The walls above the marble tile are painted Ben Moore Santorini Blue 1634. (One of my favorite colors and one of my most frequently recommended colors for being a true blue that is not too bright and reads blue but has plenty of grey in it). The awesome free standing tub is Victoia + Albert tub.

Art Lovers Swiss Army Knife Highly Designed Kitchen

This kitchen did not have many places where we could put cabinetry. My clients and I got very creative about how to get the best-designed kitchen possible with the space that they had. I like to call this the Swiss Army knife kitchen! Almost every cabinet has something that has been especially designed for it. I am so grateful to have amazing cabinet builders that can build whatever my clients needs are and that I dream up! They are amazing!

Custom built floating bookshelves and mantle look amazing when they are properly scaled for the massive fireplace and windows and soaring height of this family room. I loved sorting through the inherited treasured to stage the display shelves and only had to buy a few items to fill in here and there.

The amazing African nonprofit Nascent Solutions came to me to help them upgrade and rebrand their office space. They need to host out-of-town dignitaries in their office space and have it look and feel very specific to their mission and vision. 

I accomplished this with their trademark Nascent green color highlighted throughout the office space on different accent walls. 

But the biggest high-end impact came from complex picture collages made from over 200 stunning pictures on different sized canvases hung on different walls throughout the office space of people, but mostly beautiful children Nascent has worked with, inspired, and helped over the years.

Yoga Studio Transformation

Beautiful, peaceful and well used yoga studio in Vienna Virginia. There is an entry area, merchandise room, a tea and gathering room, the yoga studio practice area, and two really cool little bathrooms. The yoga teacher/owner wanted it to feel very earthy and very much like a tree house. When we started working together I thought she might want to look like other yoga studios but she had her own dreams for her studio. And I was so glad I was able to make them come true. There are tree motives/earthy items throughout the whole yoga studio.

Peruvian Restaurant Remodeling

I transformed Peruvian restaurant into a more high end,  sit down family restaurant,  with granite table tops, linen napkins and bar service. I used Sherwin Williams iron ore 7069 in flat on the ceiling, and in semi-gloss on the woodwork and trim. The wall color is Benjamin Moore's healing aloe 1562. This was chosen to coordinate with the floor tiles which were pointed up and re-grouted with a black grout but not changed during the renovation to keep costs down.  I found posters on line of Peruvian food and had them framed to bring authenticity, color, and interesting content to the restaurant.  I also re-designed the two bathrooms.
